The Institute’s NSW Chapter is headquartered at Tusculum, a heritage listed Colonial Regency villa in Potts Point. We support more than 3000 members through a wide range of programs including: CPD and public talks; publication of Australia’s longest running architectural journal, Architecture Bulletin; an extensive awards program; advocacy campaigns; and heritage services.
We actively engage with local and state government to promote best practices in urban planning and the profession in general. Since 1949, we have also maintained a register of significant architecture in NSW, focusing on 20th century heritage.
The NSW Chapter recognises the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation as the traditional land owners of Tusculum. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Newcastle Division
The Newcastle Division runs a host of events throughout the year for both members and public engagement with architecture. These events include formal CPD seminars, informal talks including Architecture on Show, the Newcastle Architecture Awards, and programs from our Emerging Architects and Graduate Network (EmAGN).
Country Division
NSW Country Division coordinates several regional CPD seminars throughout the year – known as ArchiMEET – as well as an annual three-day conference.
ArchiMEET offers attendees formal CPD points and takes place in different regional centres across NSW.
The NSW Country Division Conference offers members a full program of local and interstate speakers addressing topics relevant to regional practice.

Architecture Bulletin
Journal of the NSW Chapter
Architecture Bulletin is the official journal of the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter. The NSW Editorial Committee contribute towards planning, sourcing material and editing Architecture Bulletin, which has been an important cultural focus for the NSW Chapter for more than 60 years.
During this time, Architecture Bulletin has continued to evolve to match the expectations of members and present intelligent debate around the issues of contemporary practice in a balanced and inclusive manner.
Architecture Bulletin is read by a broad cross-section of the Institute’s membership – students, graduates, architects, academics – and others passionate about the creative act and practical dimension of architecture. Members can keep up to date with news, issues, events and social activities throughout the state.

About The Sydney District and Regional Planning Panels
The Sydney and regional planning panels are independent, expert decision-making bodies not subject to the direction or control of the Minister of Planning (except in relation to the procedure of the panel and any directions authorized to be given to the panel under section 9.1 or other provision of the Act).
The functions of the Sydney district and regional planning panels are to determine regionally significant development applications and provide advice on certain planning proposals and Aboriginal land planning.
There are five Sydney Planning Panels and four Regional Planning Panels across NSW. The nine Panels are the:
- Sydney Central City Planning Panel
- Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel
- Sydney North Planning Panel
- Sydney South Planning Panel
- Sydney Western City Planning Panel
- Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel
- Northern Regional Planning Panel
- Southern Regional Planning Panel
- Western Regional Planning Panel
Determinations by the panels on regionally significant development generally follow:
- The provision to the panel of a recommendation report prepared by assessment staff of the relevant local council,
- A review by the panel of the written submissions made during the public exhibition of the development application, and
- Hearing from members of the public wishing to address the panel at its public determination meeting.
Each Panel has five members; three independent expert members, including the Chair, who are appointed by the Minister for Planning, and two Council nominated members. Statutory rules govern the operation of the panels through a code of conduct and operational procedures.
To support economic prosperity for Aboriginal communities and facilitate greater participation of Aboriginal people in planning decision making we are seeking Aboriginal leaders in the industry who can actively contribute to panel decisions as they apply to Aboriginal land.

Panel Member – Burwood Design Review Panel
Expression of Interest for Panel Members
In the context of Greater Sydney, Burwood has become a vibrant destination with a unique combination of residential garden neighbourhoods and progressive mixed use precincts, which service a diverse and active community that values both the vibrancy of our town centres and history of the area.
The Burwood Design Review Panel (BDRP) has been established to examine, evaluate and comment on the design aspects of development applications referred to the BDRP. This is taking into account the Design Excellence Clause contained in section 6.5 of the Burwood Local Environmental Plan.
This is to ensure that an independent design review is completed and that high quality design outcomes would be achieved by new development within the Burwood LGA. It is also recognising the expected growth and expansion of Burwood and status of the Burwood Town Centre as a strategic centre.
Purpose of BDRP
The BDRP will provide independent, expert and pragmatic advice on design quality matters in relation to development and pre-development applications.
The role of the panel is advisory only. It has no delegated authority or power under any other function to determine any development application.
However, recommendations or comments provided in response to the development application presented to the BDRP will be used to inform the assessment process.
The types of applications that will be referred to the BDRP will include most new development within the Burwood or Strathfield Town Centres over 3 stories or other proposals which are likely to have a higher profile status by virtue of project scale, height or other locational factors.

BDRP Membership
Burwood Council is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified professionals with experience in major development within a contemporary high growth urban setting. Extensive experience and qualification in at least one of the following fields will be required:
- Urban Design
- Architecture
- Landscape Architecture; and
- Urban Planning
In addition, Burwood Council is seeking nominations for the role of Chairperson. The Chair will have responsibility for the conduct of meetings in a manner that ensures efficient use of BDRP meeting time, facilitation of open and fair exchange of views for all parties.

Senior Interior Designer – Stewart Architecture
Stewart Architecture is seeking an exceptional Interior Designer to join our growing team. This role encompasses design leadership, business development, client management, team leadership and collaboration. Outstanding designers are invited to apply for this role, to share and expand their skills, demonstrating leadership in both project design and office procedures. We are looking for an exceptional talent, with a solid grounding in detail documentation, product research and interior package coordination. The role requires the ability to manage projects concurrently, client liaison, briefing, material selection and site co-ordination. Ideal candidates will be flexible, able to adapt to change and be willing to help build our interiors team and capabilities.
Location: Canberra (Preferred) / Sydney
Key Responsibilities
Project Management
- Lead and manage multiple design projects from concept to completion concurrently
- Manage interior design and documentation files, design materials and libraries
- Work closely with external consultants and contractors
- Produce high quality output in diagrammatic, oral and written communications
- Achieve profit results on major strategic projects
- Actively seek professional guidance and input from the Directors where appropriate
- Actively procure new business
- Uphold client and firm confidentiality
- Maintain and nurture client networks
- Make strategic decisions as to priority of tasks
Team Management
- Mentor staff in career and team based activities
- Promote a collaborative office environment by working effectively within project teams
- Lead and grow a team and contribute to high morale and improved process
- Demonstrated ability to lead in a collaborative office environment
Key Skills
- Revit and Enscape/Lumion
- Strong portfolio demonstrating previous experience from concept to delivery in a range of sectors including residential and commercial
- Detailed knowledge of codes and standards relating to documentation and construction of interior environments
- Strong conceptual design skills as well as excellent client liaison skills
- Ability to manage a number of projects concurrently
- Ability to undertake tasks efficiently and with consideration of fees allocated to a task
- Demonstrate a commitment to champion the firm’s core values and behavioral standards
- Acute attention to detail
- Deep understanding and knowledge of materials and finishes
Qualifications & Appointment Criteria
- Interior Design degree or equivalent
- 8+ years professional experience
- Demonstrated excellence in executing original design concepts
- Established client and trade networks
- Ability to represent the company in private and public settings
- Experience leading, managing and mentoring teams

Architect – Stewart Architecture
Applicants will have achieved successful registration with a relevant board and have received their individual registration number. Architects provide commercially pragmatic and technically accurate architectural service and advice to staff and clients. Architects oversee project/s within the office managing all stages of projects and may manage staff or teams of staff.
Location: Canberra
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a design project/s from concept to completion
- Manage positive relationships with clients and stakeholders overcoming obstacles and mitigating risks
- Maintain a productive project program meeting deadlines as they arise
- Lead a project team efficiently and productively or work independently
- Manage co-ordination of external consultants and contractors
- Undertake project management, contract administration and post construction stage services
- Undertake all stages work in accordance with office QA policy
- Oversee the management of SA architectural design and documentation files
- Actively seek professional guidance and input from the Directors where appropriate
- Uphold client and firm confidentiality
- Implement the firm’s core values and behavioral standards
- Lead client and consultant meetings as required
- Contribute to the culture of the practice through continued engagement
- Maintain architectural registration and CPD
Key Skills
- Proficient with Revit and Enscape
- Demonstrated ability to manage conflict and resolve problems
- Knowledge of Australian standards and statutory regulations
- Detailed knowledge of codes and standards relating to documentation and construction
- Excellent client liaison skills
- Ability to make strategic decisions as to priority of tasks
- Ability to schedule, plan and anticipate potential project obstacles
- The ability to work unsupervised when consultation is not available or impractical
- Positive attitude towards collaboration and encouragement of junior staff
